Update: Wrong Way Driver Charged

The pursuit began in Frederick County, and ended in Montgomery County.

Frederick, Md (KM) A suspect has been charged in connection with a vehicle pursuit which began Friday afternoon in Frederick County and ended in Montgomery County. Cory Thomas Burkhardt of Idlewylde, Maryland, 37 was taken into custody following a vehicle chase.

The Sheriff’s Office says at around 4:00 PM, a deputy observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Route 15 near Rosemont Avenue in a reckless ,manner.  A pursuit began and continued on to Interstate 270 with the driver heading southbound in the northbound lanes.

Police used stop sticks to try and deflate the vehicle’s tires, but the driver was able to evade them.

Near the Clarksburg exit of I-270, a deputy used a police cruiser to get the suspect’s vehicle to stop by forcing it into a guardrail.

Authorities say Burkhardt initially refused to get out. Deputies used non-lethal force and two children, age 8 and 12, were able to get out safely.

Burkhardt got out carrying a child about two years of age, and fled on foot. He was tazed by deputies, and  they were able to safely secure the child. The suspect was taken to Frederick Health Hospital for an emergency evaluation.

Before the charging process was completed, , the Sheriff’s Office say Burkhardt forced his way out of the hospital. He was apprehended by Frederick Police Officers, and brought back to the hospital.

-Two counts of First-Degree Assault

-Four counts of Second-Degree Assault

-Disarming a Law Enforcement Officer

-Attempt by Driver to Elude a Uniformed Police Officer by Failing to Stop

-Attempt by Driver to Elude Police in an Official Police Vehicle by Failing to Stop

-Reckless Driving

-Negligent Driving a Vehicle in a Careless and Imprudent Manner Endangering Property, Life, and Person

-Failure to Drive on the Right-Hand Roadway of a Divided Highway

-Driving on the Median Strip of a Divided Highway

-Failing to Secure a Child Under Two Years Old in a Rear-Facing Child Safety Seat that Complies with Federal Regulations

-Willfully Disobeying the Lawful Order or Direction of a Police Officer .

The Sheriff’s Office says it was assisted in this operation by the Maryland State Police–Frederick Barrack; the Montgomery County Police and the Frederick City Police.  There were no serious  injuries to deputies, the three children or the public.

Clarksburg, Md (KM) Charges are expected to be filed against a man who drove the wrong way on southbound Interstate 270 Friday afternoon, causing a massive traffic backup.

Maryland State Police say a chase began in Frederick County when a vehicle was observed traveling on the southbound shoulder of northbound Route 15. A state trooper located the vehicle , and began a pursuit as the driver headed south in the northbound lanes of I-270.   The state trooper broke off the pursuit in the Urbana area.  A Sheriff Deputy continued the chase.

The pursuit ended near Clarksburg when the driver traveling in the wrong direction collided with another car.

Authorities say a man in the vehicle got out holding a child who was inside with him. Montgomery County Police contacted negotiators to resolve the situation. Officers used a taser on the man.

Police say the man was injured in the crash, but the child is  okay.
