Open Burning Ban Takes Effect June 1st, 2025 In Frederick County

It will last until August 31st, 2025.

Frederick, Md (KM) The annual open burning ban takes affect this Sunday, June 1st, and continues until August 31st. The Frederick County Health Department say open burning permits will not be issued during that time.. The ban does not apply to small recreational fires such as campfires, barbecues or gas grills.

This annual ban is required by Maryland Air Quality regulations which went into affect in June, 1995.  It extends throughout the entire Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Region.

Officials say it’s designed to reduce ozone levels allowing for better air quality. The ban is not related to rainfall, the Health Department says.

Residents are reminded that they need to obtain a permit do any open burning in the months when the ban is not effect.  Information on how to obtain a permit is available at the Frederick County Health Department website, Health.FrederickCountyMD.gov/burn/Permit.

Violations of the ban on open burning and open burring without a permit are subject to a fine of $500 under Frederick County Code, and up to $25,000 under Maryland State Regulations.

Burning of household trash or rubbish is prohibited any time of the year.
