Frederick, Md (KM) More than 100 dogs, cats and ferrets were vaccinated during a rabies clinic held on Saturday, May 3rd at Old National Pike Park in Mount Airy. That’s according to the Frederick County Health Department’s Environmental Health Office, which conducted the clinic. .
It says vaccination is most the effective way to prevent your pets from being exposed to rabies even if they come into contact with unvaccinated animals.
In humans, health officials say rabies is always fatal if left untreated.. They urge everyone to avoid contact with unvaccinated animals. IF they are exposed, get treatment immediately.
The Health Department says last year, there were 34 confirmed rabies cases in Frederick County. The virus was detected in skunks, raccoons, cats, foxes, groundhogs and a cow. This year, there have been five cases of rabies so far in raccoons and foxes.
Another rabies vaccination clinic is scheduled for Sunday, June 29th from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM at Thurmont Community Park, 19 Frederick Road in Thurmont. Each vaccination is $10 payable in cash or check; no credit or debit cards, the Health Department says. All dogs, cats, and ferrets 12 week or older are welcome.
