Scary Noise Captured On Video At Landon House

The Landon House in Urbana, Maryland, is said to be the one of the most haunted places in Frederick County!

The house was constructed in 1754 along the Rappahannock River.  Later in 1840, it was relocated to Urbana.

General J.E.B. Stuart owned the home during the Civil War. He hosted many social functions at the Landon House, including the ‘Sabers and Roses Ball’ early in September of 1862.  A few weeks later, General Stuart and his troops fought in one of the deadliest battles ever, the Battle of Antietam.

During the the Civil War, the house served as a hospital for both Confederate and Union troops.  Yankee and Rebel soldiers.dated and signed Civil War sketches that are still on the walls.  Many soldiers died in the house.

The Landon House is on the National Register of Historic Places.  It’s also on another list, of haunted places to visit in Frederick County.

Workers have claimed to have see apparitions and say some people feel uneasy about being in the basement where the worst spirits roam.

In 2004 the West Michigan Ghost Hunters Society performed an investigation at the Landon House and found paranormal activity in most of the rooms.  They found extreme feelings of negativity and anger in the basement, and unexplained footsteps in the hallways.

Spook Hill — Haunted Or Not

If you grew up in Frederick County, you have heard about the ghostly legends associated with Spook Hill in Burkittsville, Maryland.

Spook Hill is a stretch of Gapland Road near a battle site of the Civil War where people say if you put your vehicle in neutral at the base of the hill, the ghosts of Confederate soldiers will push it back up the incline.

Rumors circulating around this mysterious phenomenon say that the ghosts of these soldiers believe they are still at war and pushing cannons and artillery pieces. Some thrill seekers have even said they have heard laughter coming from the woods.

Skeptics say it’s all an optical illusion because the natural surroundings make a downhill slope appear to go uphill.

Have you been pushed up Spook Hill?  Do you believe it’s haunted by the ghosts of Confederate soldiers or is it an optical illusion?

Check out the video and decide for yourself!

Frederick County’s Mythic Monsters-Snallygaster & Dewayo

Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands has Nessie, the Mothman terrorizes residents of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and some in Kentucky believe a werewolf by the name of Bearilla is a shape shifter in the woods.

But did you know that Frederick County, Maryland is home to two mythical monsters? According to legend, the Snallygaster and Dewayo have put fear in parents and haunted the dreams of children for years.

The Snallygaster first appeared in Middletown Valley in early February 1909.  James Harding was the first person to see it and said the beast had enormous wings, a long sharp beak, claws like steel, and one eye in the middle of its forehead. He said it made shrill screeching noises and looked like a cross between a tiger and a vampire.

Supposedly, Snallygaster killed Bill Gifferson, by piercing his neck with its sharp bill and slowly sucking his blood.

Others said they saw the beast flying and making a horrible screeching sound.

Snallygaster hysteria reached the White House and President Theodore Roosevelt almost postponed a trip to Europe so that he could lead an expedition to capture it.

In March of 1909, three men fought Snallygaster near Emmitsburg for 90 minutes before chasing it into the woods of Carroll County.

There is one known enemy of the Snallygaster; Dewayo.

Dewayo is said to be a hairy mammal with a bushy tail.  The creature looks similar to a wolf but with the arms, and stands like a human.  Reportedly, the Snallygaster and Dewayo have had vicious fights dating back 1767 when Middletown, Maryland was being settled.

Dewayo sightings have been reported mainly in the west Middletown area.

In November of 1965, a man who lived near Gambrill State Park heard a nose in his yard at night.  He went out to investigate and saw something moving towards him. He said it was as big as a bear, had long black hair, a bushy tail, and growled like a wolf or a dog in anger.  The animal got closer to him and attacked.  The man fought back and the creature ran into the woods.  He called police to file a report.

Others reported seeing Dewayo in Adamstown and Jefferson.

Are these two Frederick County mythical creatures real?  Those who have encountered these beasts say they exist and we need to be vigilant!

Local Farms Featured In TV Show

Several local farms will be featured on Maryland Public 4th Season of Television’s ‘Maryland Farm & Harvest’.

MPT Brings Back ‘Maryland Farm & Harvest’ For 4th Season

farm
Ownings Mills, Md (KM)  It’s back! “Maryland Farm and Harvest” begins its 4th season next month on Maryland Public Television.

Producer and director Sarah Sampson says the program highlights agriculture which is the largest industry in the state, and  accounted  for $4.7-billion in direct output in 2010. “We know a lot of people go out to farmers’ markets on the weekends. They’ll try and buy from local farms if they see things at the grocery store that comes from a local farm. Our goal is to show where that food is coming from,” she says.

In addition, Sampson says the program also tries to show the diversity Maryland agriculture. In the premier episode in November, “Maryland Farm and Harvest” will showcase the Hutchinson Brothers Farm in Talbot County, which NASA satellites monitor the farm’s soil to enhance sustainability efforts, according to a news release from MPT.

Another farm being featured on the first episode is the Triple-R Bull Company in Boonsboro. “They train bulls for bull riding and bull riding competitions,” says Sampson. “Normally , you hear that and you think out west like Colorado or someplace like that. We’ve actually got a couple of farms here in Maryland that do that.”

Another program will feature the Catoctin High School FFA’s country butchering, where students who members of the FFA get together with community members that  teach them how to butcher animals for meat. “This episode actually shows how sausage is made. But we try to keep it TV appropriate,” says Sampson.

The MPT camera crews also visited  the Sweet Farm in Woodsboro during the 4th season. “The segment explains how you make sauerkraut. You can see the cabbage being grown and the farmers themselves fermenting their own sauerkraut,” she says.

And MPT will feature the Teabow Farm in Walkersville. Sampson says that farm provides milk to a Nestle’s ice cream plant in Laurel. “I believe what we highlight is cookies and cream ice cream,” she says. “If you watch that episode, you want to make sure you have some ice cream nearby because it’s going to make you hungry.”

“When we first started, we’d call farmers and they said ‘who; who are you with; where are you from; what do you want to do?’ But now  they know who we are and they’re very excited to have us come out to their farms and feature their farms,” says Sampson.

But, she says, it’s often difficult to schedule a time to come out and shoot video. In addition, many farmers are very busy. But the camera crews follow them around, and ask them questions as they’re working.

The 4th season of “Maryland Farm and Harvest” begins on Tuesday, November 15th at 7:00 PM on MPT. The program is rebroadcast on Thursdays at 11:30 PM, an Sundays at 6:00 AM. The show also airs on MPT2 on Fridays at 7:00 PM.

Maryland has more than 12,200 farms which totals about two-million acres and nearly 6.000 full time farmers. The agriculture industry alone employs more than 22,000 workers and stimulates additional employment of 36,000 workers.
