The baby remains in critical condition following early morning attack.
Leesburg, VA (JK) – Leesburg authorities have arrested a local man after an infant was found critically injured in what police are investigating as an assault.
Officers were called just after 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, to the unit block of Hancock Place Northeast for a report of an unresponsive baby. The infant was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical staff confirmed life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, 21-year-old Alvaro Mejia Ayala of Leesburg (pictured above), fled the scene before police arrived. With help from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, he was located later that afternoon on the 100 block of Meadows Lane Northeast. He has been charged with strangulation, and authorities say additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Leesburg Police Department at 703-771-4500 or anonymously at 703-443-TIPS (8477).
