He had been acting director for a few months.
Frederick, Md (KM) There’s a new director of the Frederick County Division of Solid Waste and Recycling. Lee Zimmerman was appointed to the post by County Executive Jessica Fitzwater. The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday by the County Council.
Zimmerman served as Deputy Director of the Division from June, 2022 until June, 2024 when he took over as Acting Director following the retirement of Phil Harris.
The Division of Solid Waste and Recycling manages the landfill on Reichs Ford Road as well as the transfer station, and county recycling efforts.
“In today’s world, we need to shift our approach to waste management by focusing on reducing waste, improving recycling and composting initiatives, and using landfills to generate renewal energy,” says County Executive Fitzwater, in a statement. “Lee’s extensive experience and proven leadership will help us implement these changes effectively and drive us toward more sustainable waste management practices.”
The County says Zimmerman has worked in several areas of waste management and recycling during the past 30 years. Prior to coming to Frederick County, he managed municipal solid waste landfills in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Part of his experiences has also included preparing budgets, meeting state and federal permit requirements, and managing environmental issues. In its statement, the county says Zimmerman puts a priority on employee safety and community relations.
