Persons claiming to be officers or deputies calling citizens, demanding money.
Frederick, Md (KM) Area law enforcement agencies, including the Frederick Police and the Sheriff’s Office, say they’ve received reports about scammers targeting the community.
Both agencies say these individuals call citizens, claiming to be officers, deputies or employees of the City Police or Sheriff’s Office. They say you’ve missed jury duty, or have outstanding warrants or court paperwork that needs to be satisfied. These scammers demand payment as the only way to “resolve” this issue without making a court appearance.
Both the Frederick Police and the Sheriff’s Office say they will never contact you to solicit funds; .and law enforcement agencies do not resolve legal matters over the phone or through e-mail.
You’re also strongly urged not to give out credit card, banking or personal information over the phone or though e-mail.
If you believe you or someone you know has been targeted by a scammer, contact your local law enforcement agency. .
Other advice from both the Frederick Police and the Sheriff’s Office include be skeptical of unsolicited calls or e-mails, especially those creating urgency or fear. Verify each caller’s identity independently using official contact information. Use strong, unique passwords and keep your devices updated. In addition, cover your webcam when it’s not in use.
