Frederick, Md. (DG) – The Frederick Police Department says a 37-year-old cold case is now officially closed. Investigators have identified the person responsible for the 1988 homicide of Delores Marie Thompson.
Thompson was found dead inside her apartment in the 100 block of South Market Street on February first, 1988. An autopsy later determined she had been strangled with a ligature and that evidence of a sexual assault was present.
At the time, DNA testing was still in its early stages, and no suspect could be scientifically identified. Earlier this year, detectives and crime scene specialists re-examined the physical evidence and discovered a small area of bedding that had never been tested.
Modern forensic analysis produced a DNA profile that matched convicted offender Calvin Ziegler through state and national databases. Ziegler, who was known to the victim, died in 2010.
The State’s Attorney’s Office confirms the evidence supports his responsibility, bringing long-awaited closure to Thompson’s family.
