Prescribed Burn Planned For City Of Frederick Watershed

It will take place between Nov. 17th and Nov.21st.

Frederick, Md (KM) A prescribed burn is scheduled in the City of Frederick Watershed from November 17th through the 21st.

Officials say the purpose is to restore a stand of pitch pine off of Gambrill Park Road which is 95 years old and at the end of its life span. The burn will reduce competing vegetation, and help the seeds germinate. Pitch pine seeds are nutritious for wildlife,  and the burning will also help a new generation of seedings to take root.

The City says the fire will create smoke on Catoctin Mountain, but it will be a low, controlled flame. The fire staff from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will be on hand to direct the fire, and there will be trucks to pull water from a nearby fire pond if necessary.

Gambrill Park Road will be closed between the Junction with Fishing Creek Road, and Gate R6. .  All trails in the northeast section of the Watershed will be closed during the prescribed burn. .

The burn will only take place if conditions are favorable on a date during the one-week window, City officials say.
